Wolkra

One-click WordPress on a German VPS

Updated

The WordPress app gives you a Frankfurt cloud server with WordPress, the Caddy web server, PHP, MariaDB and WP-CLI installed together, so you can start building a site a few minutes after the server boots.

You own the whole server: no plugin bans, no visitor limits and no traffic bill, because bandwidth is unmetered.

What is installed

Component Role
WordPress The open-source content management system
Caddy Web server that can obtain HTTPS certificates automatically
PHP Runs WordPress
MariaDB The database that stores posts, pages and settings
WP-CLI The WordPress command line for updates, users and imports

All of it runs on one standard Linux server. You can change PHP settings, add caching, or install other software next to it.

Which plan to start with

WordPress mostly needs memory for PHP and the database.

  • Personal blog or small company site: the smallest Standard plan is a fine start.
  • Several plugins, page builders or a WooCommerce shop: choose 2 to 4 GB of memory.
  • Busy sites: move to a bigger Standard plan, or a CPU-optimised (c) plan for heavy PHP work.

Standard

Shared vCPU for websites, apps, VPNs and development.

S448 GB80 GBUnmetered€0.0288€17.99

Billing is hourly from a prepaid balance, capped at the monthly price. Resize when traffic grows. The disk grows with the plan and never shrinks.

Signing in after boot

  1. Create a server in the console and choose WordPress as the app.
  2. When the server is running, wait a few minutes for the installation to finish.
  3. Open the server's public address in your browser. WordPress shows its own setup or sign-in screen.
  4. Create or confirm your admin account and sign in to the dashboard at /wp-admin/.

For command-line work, connect with SSH as root using your key or the emailed password. See connect with SSH.

First steps

Point a domain at the server

Create an A record for the server's IPv4 address and an AAAA record for its IPv6 address at your DNS provider. Once the domain resolves to the server, Caddy can request a certificate so the site loads over HTTPS. Update the WordPress address and site address to the new domain under Settings, General or with WP-CLI.

Use WP-CLI

WP-CLI saves time for common jobs:

wp core update
wp plugin update --all
wp user list
wp search-replace 'http://old.example' 'https://example.com'

Run it from the WordPress directory, as the user that owns the site files.

Protect the site

  • Attach a free firewall that allows only 22, 80 and 443.
  • Use SSH keys and disable password logins.
  • Keep WordPress, themes and plugins updated, and remove the ones you don't use.
  • Turn on daily backups for 20% of the server price, or take a snapshot before updates.

Set reverse DNS

If your site sends mail, set reverse DNS (PTR) for the primary IP to your domain. See IP addresses.

Performance tips

  • Cache pages. A page cache plugin lets most visits skip PHP and the database.
  • Add an object cache such as Redis for busy dashboards and shops.
  • Resize images before upload and serve modern formats.
  • Limit plugins to the ones you need. Each one adds work to every request.
  • Watch the graphs. The console shows CPU, disk and network for the server. See monitoring.

Why WordPress on Wolkra

  • Servers in Germany. Visitors across Europe get low latency from the centre of Europe, and data stays in the EU. See VPS Germany.
  • Unmetered bandwidth. Images, downloads and traffic peaks do not bring per-GB fees. Ports go up to 10 Gbit/s, shared, with fair use.
  • Hourly billing. Build a staging copy, test an update, and delete it. You pay for the hours it ran.
  • Room to grow. Add a volume for uploads, a load balancer for several web servers, or a separate database server in a private network.

Frequently asked questions

What does the WordPress app include?

WordPress with the Caddy web server, PHP, a MariaDB database and WP-CLI, all on one Linux server that you fully control.

Does the WordPress app support HTTPS?

Caddy can get and renew certificates automatically once a domain points at the server. Set the DNS record first, then configure the domain on the server.

Which plan is enough for a WordPress site?

A small Standard plan handles a typical blog or company site. Shops and busy sites with many plugins do better with 2 to 4 GB of memory.

Can I move an existing WordPress site to the server?

Yes. Copy the files and import the database with your usual migration plugin or with WP-CLI, then point your domain at the new server.

Is this managed WordPress hosting?

No. You get a server with WordPress installed and root access. Updates, plugins and security are in your hands, which also means no limits on what you install.
