Wolkra

EU VPS with your data kept in Germany

Updated

A Wolkra EU VPS keeps your servers, volumes, backups and snapshots in Frankfurt, Germany, so personal data you host stays inside the EU. We name every processor we use and give you account controls that make a GDPR review easier to complete.

What "GDPR-friendly" means here

The GDPR does not ban any particular hosting provider. It asks you, as the controller, to know where personal data goes, who can access it and how it is protected. A hosting provider can make that easier or harder. We try to make it easier in three ways:

  1. A clear data location. Server data is stored in one place, our Frankfurt data center.
  2. A short, named list of processors. No vague "trusted partners".
  3. Controls for your team. Roles, two-factor authentication and an activity log let you show who did what.

We describe only what we actually do, and we don't tell you that a server in Germany makes a product compliant by itself. Your application, your contracts with your customers and your own processes still matter. Our guide to GDPR hosting in Germany goes through the questions to ask.

Who this page is for

  • Data protection officers and consultants checking where a vendor stores data.
  • SaaS companies whose customers ask "is our data hosted in the EU?" during procurement.
  • Agencies hosting websites with contact forms, shops or member areas for EU clients.
  • Health, education and public-sector projects that prefer infrastructure in Germany.
  • Individuals who simply want their files and mail outside non-EU clouds.

Building a privacy-conscious setup

Location is only one part of data protection. The rest is architecture. With Wolkra you can:

  • Keep databases off the internet. Put them on a private network with no public IP, and give them outbound access through a NAT gateway only for updates.
  • Restrict what can reach a server. Stateful firewalls with inbound and outbound rules are free, so there is no reason to skip them.
  • Encrypt what you store. Because you get full root access on a KVM server, you can encrypt volumes and files with the tools you trust.
  • Plan recovery. Daily backups (20% of the server price, 7 restore points) and on-demand snapshots stay in Germany. See backups and snapshots.
  • Limit API access. API tokens are scoped to a project, can be read-only, can be bound to an IP allow list and can expire.

Account security and accountability

GDPR asks for appropriate technical and organisational measures. On the account side, Wolkra offers:

  • Organizations with roles: owner, admin, billing and member, plus roles per project.
  • Two-factor authentication with TOTP apps, and sign-in with Google if you prefer.
  • A list of active sessions you can end.
  • An activity log of changes in your organization.

These are described on teams and security and in the account security docs.

Abuse handling

A clean neighbourhood is part of a trustworthy host. Reports go to [email protected] and each case has a deadline for the customer to respond. Our Acceptable Use Policy explains what is not allowed, including traffic patterns that cause unusually heavy load for others.

Plans and billing

The same plans and prices apply to everyone. Traffic is unmetered with fair use, ports go up to 10 Gbit/s shared, and you pay per started hour from a prepaid balance, capped at the monthly price.

Frequently asked questions

Does hosting with Wolkra make my service GDPR compliant?

No host can make you compliant on its own. Wolkra gives you servers whose data stays in Germany and a transparent list of processors, which helps, but you remain responsible for how your application handles personal data.

Where are backups and snapshots stored?

Backups and snapshots are stored in our Frankfurt data center in Germany, alongside your servers and volumes.

Which third parties process data for Wolkra?

Our privacy policy names them: AWS in the Frankfurt region sends our emails, Stripe processes card payments and Cloudflare protects the website and console.

What security measures does Wolkra offer for my account?

Organizations with roles, per-project permissions, two-factor authentication, a list of active sessions and an activity log. Free stateful firewalls and private networks help protect the servers themselves.

How do I contact Wolkra about privacy?

Write to [email protected]. Abuse reports go to [email protected] and general questions to [email protected] or a ticket in the console.
