Wolkra

WordPress hosting in Germany

Updated

WordPress hosting with Wolkra means your site runs on its own cloud server in Frankfurt, Germany, with WordPress, Caddy, PHP, MariaDB and WP-CLI installed in one click, unmetered traffic and no limits on plugins or visitors.

It suits site owners and agencies who want speed and control, and who want their data in Germany.

Why a VPS for WordPress

Shared WordPress plans are easy, but they cap you in quiet ways: slow PHP workers, blocked plugins, limited cron, extra fees for traffic or sites. On your own server:

  • Your own machine. The server has its own memory and disk, and no other customer's sites run in your operating system.
  • Any plugin, any theme. Install caching, page builders, WooCommerce or custom code without asking.
  • Real cron and background jobs. Run system cron instead of relying on page visits.
  • Root access. Tune PHP, the database and the web server for your site.

Start with the WordPress app

The WordPress app builds a server with:

  • WordPress, the open-source CMS
  • Caddy, which can fetch and renew HTTPS certificates automatically
  • PHP and MariaDB
  • WP-CLI for updates, users and search-and-replace from the command line

It is ready a few minutes after the server boots. Open the server address in a browser, set up your admin account, and point your domain at the server.

  • WooCommerce, membership sites or heavy page builders: 2 to 4 GB of memory.
  • High-traffic or many sites on one server: larger Standard plans or CPU-optimised (c) plans.

WordPress and GDPR

Hosting in Germany keeps your site's database, uploads and logs in the EU. That answers one important question in your GDPR documentation: where the data lives. Remember that plugins for analytics, fonts, forms or email may send data to other services, so check those too. Our GDPR hosting guide and EU VPS and GDPR page explain more.

Speed for European visitors

Frankfurt sits in the centre of Europe, so visitors from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Benelux, France, Poland and beyond get low latency. On top of that:

  • Use a page cache plugin or server-level caching to serve most pages without PHP.
  • Add an object cache such as Redis for busy sites.
  • Serve images in modern formats and at the right size.

Unmetered traffic means media-heavy sites do not pay per GB. Ports go up to 10 Gbit/s, shared, with fair use.

Keeping WordPress safe

  1. Attach a free firewall for ports 22, 80 and 443 only.
  2. Use SSH keys and turn off password sign-in.
  3. Update WordPress core, plugins and themes regularly. wp plugin update --all does it in one line.
  4. Use strong admin passwords and two-factor authentication through a plugin.
  5. Turn on daily backups for 20% of the server price, with 7 restore points, and take a snapshot before major updates.

Our secure an Ubuntu server guide covers the system side.

Agencies: many sites, one console

  • Group client sites into projects and give clients or colleagues access with per-project roles. See teams and security.
  • Use labels to apply one firewall to every web server.
  • Clone a template site from a snapshot to start new projects quickly.
  • Run staging copies for a few hours and delete them, paying only for those hours.

Moving an existing site

Moving WordPress from another host takes three steps: copy the files, import the database, and update the domain. A migration plugin can do all three. With WP-CLI you export the database on the old host, import it on the new one, and run a search-and-replace for the address. Test on the new server first, then switch DNS.

Growing past one server

For larger sites, move MariaDB to a separate server in a private network, store uploads on a block storage volume, and put two web servers behind a load balancer. Our WordPress on a VPS guide covers the details.

Frequently asked questions

Is WordPress hosting on a VPS hard to manage?

It needs some command-line comfort for updates and backups. The WordPress app removes the setup work, and WP-CLI makes routine tasks quick.

Is my WordPress site's data stored in Germany?

Yes. The server, its disk and its backups are in Frankfurt, Germany. Services you add through plugins may store data elsewhere.

Can I host several WordPress sites on one server?

Yes. You can run several sites on one server with separate directories and databases, or use WordPress multisite.

What happens if my site gets a traffic spike?

Traffic is unmetered, so there is no bandwidth bill. If the server runs short of CPU or memory, resize to a bigger plan.

Do you offer managed WordPress?

No. You get the server and full control. We look after the hardware and network, and you look after WordPress.
