KVM VPS hosting
Updated
Every Wolkra server is a KVM VPS: a full virtual machine with its own kernel, its own virtual hardware and complete root access, running in Frankfurt, Germany. That means Docker, VPNs, custom kernel settings and any Linux distribution work the way they do on a physical machine.
What KVM means for you
KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine) is the virtualisation layer built into Linux. It lets one physical host run many isolated virtual machines, each of which believes it has its own CPU, memory, disk and network card. On Wolkra, each of those machines is yours alone, and it boots from a network volume in our Frankfurt location.
The practical difference shows up when you try to do something the host doesn't expect. On a KVM server you are not limited by somebody else's kernel version or by a list of allowed features.
KVM compared with container-based VPS
| KVM VPS (Wolkra) | Container-based VPS | |
|---|---|---|
| Kernel | Your own | Shared with the host |
| Kernel modules and sysctl | Under your control | Mostly fixed by the host |
| Docker and Kubernetes tools | Work normally | Often limited or blocked |
| WireGuard and other VPNs | Work normally | Depend on host support |
| Operating systems | Linux distributions and MikroTik CHR | Usually Linux only, same kernel |
| Isolation | Separate virtual machine | Separate namespace on one kernel |
Container-based servers can be fine for very simple use. If you want predictable behaviour and freedom to run what you like, a KVM VPS is the safer choice.
Who needs a KVM server
- Docker users who want containers, Compose stacks or a self-hosted PaaS such as Coolify.
- VPN builders running WireGuard or other tunnels that need kernel features.
- Network engineers using MikroTik CHR as a virtual router.
- Security and systems learners who want to tweak kernels, firewalls and boot settings.
- Teams running CI runners, databases or GitLab, where reliability matters more than squeezing costs.
What you can do with your KVM VPS
Full control of the machine
- Root access over SSH, with keys or an emailed password.
- A browser VNC console that works even when the network inside the server is broken.
- Rescue mode to repair the disk from outside the installed system.
- Power actions from the console or the API.
- Rebuild with a fresh image whenever you like.
Flexible hardware
- Resize to a bigger plan when you need more vCPUs or memory. The disk can grow, never shrink.
- Attach volumes from 10 GB to 10 TB, and grow them online.
- Spread servers over different physical hosts with placement groups.
Network features
- Unmetered traffic, with fair use, on ports up to 10 Gbit/s shared.
- An IPv6 address included; primary IPv4 at €0.89 per month.
- Private networks, NAT gateways, Elastic IPs and floating IPs.
- A free stateful firewall that filters traffic before it reaches your VM.
A note on performance
A virtual machine shares a physical host with others, so it is fair to ask how predictable it is. On Standard plans the vCPUs are shared, which keeps prices low and works well for websites, APIs and most services. If your workload is CPU-bound for long periods, choose a CPU-optimised plan. Network ports go up to 10 Gbit/s and are shared too, under our fair-use policy.
KVM plans
Three plan families are on sale. Standard (s) uses shared vCPUs and suits most workloads. CPU-optimised (c) gives more compute per euro for builds and processing. Memory-optimised (m) gives more RAM per vCPU for databases and caches.
Standard
Shared vCPU for websites, apps, VPNs and development.
| Plan | vCPU | RAM | Disk | Traffic | Hourly | Monthly cap |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| S0 | 1 | 1 GB | 15 GB | Unmetered | €0.0056 | €3.49 |
| S1 | 1 | 2 GB | 30 GB | Unmetered | €0.0080 | €4.99 |
| S2 | 2 | 4 GB | 40 GB | Unmetered | €0.0144 | €8.99 |
| S3 | 2 | 8 GB | 50 GB | Unmetered | €0.0200 | €12.49 |
| S4 | 4 | 8 GB | 80 GB | Unmetered | €0.0288 | €17.99 |
| S5 | 4 | 16 GB | 100 GB | Unmetered | €0.0400 | €24.99 |
CPU optimized
More vCPU per GB for builds, compute and busy APIs.
| Plan | vCPU | RAM | Disk | Traffic | Hourly | Monthly cap |

| C3 | 8 | 8 GB | 70 GB | Unmetered | €0.0432 | €26.99 |
Memory optimized
More RAM per vCPU for databases, caches and in-memory work.
| Plan | vCPU | RAM | Disk | Traffic | Hourly | Monthly cap |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| M1 | 1 | 8 GB | 30 GB | Unmetered | €0.0160 | €9.99 |

Prices are in EUR without VAT, billed per started hour from a prepaid balance and capped at the monthly price. Dedicated vCPU and storage-heavy families are planned but not available yet. See pricing for add-ons.
Getting a KVM VPS running
- Create an account and top up by card, USDT or TRX.
- Create a server in Frankfurt and choose a plan family.
- Pick a Linux distribution or a one-click app.
- Add your SSH key and, if you like, cloud-init user data.
- Connect, and install whatever your project needs.
The create a server doc walks through each step, and cloud servers describes every server feature.
KVM in the centre of Europe
Running in Frankfurt gives your KVM server low latency across Europe and keeps its disks, backups and snapshots in Germany. Read more on VPS Germany.

Frequently asked questions
What is a KVM VPS?
It is a virtual private server that runs as a full virtual machine under KVM, the hypervisor built into the Linux kernel. Each server has its own kernel and virtual hardware.
Can I run Docker on a Wolkra KVM VPS?
Yes. Because every server is a full virtual machine, Docker and Docker Compose work normally. There is also a one-click Docker CE image.
Can I load my own kernel modules?
Yes. You control the kernel of your server, so you can load modules for things like WireGuard or change kernel settings with sysctl.
How is a KVM VPS different from a container VPS?
A container VPS shares the host's kernel and is limited by it. A KVM VPS has its own kernel, so you can run almost any Linux software and set up the system as you like.
Are Wolkra's vCPUs dedicated?
The Standard plans use shared vCPUs. CPU-optimised and Memory-optimised plans are also available; dedicated vCPU plans are not on sale yet.
