Wolkra

Web hosting on your own server in Germany

Updated

Web hosting on Wolkra means running your websites on your own KVM cloud server in Frankfurt, with root access, unmetered traffic and billing by the hour instead of a shared hosting package.

You choose the web server, the language and the database, and you can grow from one small site to a load-balanced setup without moving providers.

Who this is for

  • Developers and agencies who host several client sites and want one place to manage them.
  • Businesses that want their website and data in Germany.
  • Anyone who has outgrown shared hosting: slow pages, blocked software, or limits on PHP, cron jobs and background workers.

If you mainly run WordPress, the WordPress hosting page goes deeper.

What a typical setup looks like

One server for small sites

A single cloud server runs a web server such as Caddy or Nginx, your application runtime (PHP, Node.js, Python, Go or anything else) and a database. This is enough for most company sites, portfolios, blogs and small shops.

Standard

Shared vCPU for websites, apps, VPNs and development.

Separate web and database

As traffic grows, move the database to its own server in a private network. The database then has no public address at all, and the web server talks to it privately. See databases.

Several web servers

For higher traffic or no single point of failure, run two or more web servers behind a load balancer. Health checks take a broken server out of rotation, and placement groups keep the servers on different hosts.

Getting a site online

  1. Create a server. Pick a Linux image such as Ubuntu or Debian, or start from the Docker or WordPress app.
  2. Secure it. Add SSH keys, attach a free firewall for ports 22, 80 and 443, and apply updates. Our first steps guide has a checklist.
  3. Install a web server. Caddy gets HTTPS certificates automatically. See the Caddy reverse proxy guide.
  4. Point your domain. Add an A record for the IPv4 address and an AAAA record for the IPv6 address.
  5. Deploy your site with Git, rsync, or a Compose file.
  6. Turn on backups. Daily backups cost 20% of the server price and keep 7 restore points.

Why host websites on Wolkra

Unmetered traffic

Every plan includes unmetered traffic with fair use, on ports up to 10 Gbit/s, shared. Large images, video, downloads and sudden visitor spikes do not turn into a per-GB bill. See unmetered bandwidth.

Servers in Germany

Your site and its data live in Frankfurt, close to visitors across Germany and Europe. That helps with GDPR questions and with speed for a European audience. See VPS Germany and EU VPS and GDPR.

Billing that matches real use

Prepaid balance, billed per started hour, capped at the monthly price. No contracts and no setup fees. A staging server that runs for two days costs two days. See hourly billing.

Building blocks when you need them

  • Floating IPs move between servers in seconds, useful for switching to a new server without DNS changes.
  • Block storage volumes hold uploads and media apart from the server disk.
  • Snapshots let you clone a working server into a new one.
  • Reverse DNS for your IPs, set in the console. See IP addresses.

Choosing a stack

Site type A common stack
Static site or documentation Caddy serving files
PHP site or CMS Caddy or Nginx, PHP-FPM, MariaDB or MySQL
Node.js, Python or Go app Caddy as reverse proxy, your app as a service
Several apps on one server Docker Compose with a reverse proxy container

Any of these runs on a plain Linux server. Pick the one your team knows best.

What you manage yourself

A VPS is unmanaged. We run the hardware, network and platform. You run the operating system, the web server, your sites and their updates. If you prefer not to touch the command line, a self-hosted platform such as Coolify gives you a dashboard for deploying sites on your own server.

Frequently asked questions

Is a VPS better than shared web hosting?

A VPS gives you your own resources, root access and any software you like. Shared hosting is simpler but limits what you can run and shares performance with other sites.

How many websites can I host on one VPS?

As many as the server's CPU, memory and disk handle. Many small sites fit on one small plan, and you can resize when it gets busy.

Is traffic for my websites metered?

No. Traffic is unmetered on every plan with a fair-use policy, so a traffic spike does not bring a bandwidth bill.

Do you provide a control panel?

There is no hosting control panel included. You manage the server over SSH, or install a panel or a platform such as Coolify yourself.

Where are the servers located?

In our data center in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Visitors across Europe get low latency from the centre of Europe.
