Who builds in Frankfurt

This page is for people who already know they want Frankfurt and want to know what they can run there.

  • Platform engineers setting up a small production stack: app servers, a database, a load balancer.
  • Fintech and e-commerce teams that want servers physically in Germany's financial capital and data inside the EU.
  • Network enthusiasts running MikroTik CHR as a virtual router or a WireGuard gateway.
  • Developers who need a quick Frankfurt box for testing latency or reproducing a bug near European users.

Compute

Standard (s), CPU-optimised (c) and Memory-optimised (m) plan families are available. Servers can be resized to a bigger plan, rebuilt with another image, booted into rescue mode or reached through a browser console when SSH is not an option. Delete protection and labels help keep production servers safe and organised. Read more on cloud servers.

Networking

  • Private networks with your own IP ranges. Servers can live without any public IP.
  • NAT gateways give private servers outbound internet access.
  • Elastic IPs map a public address to a private server.
  • Floating IPs move between servers in seconds for simple failover.
  • Reverse DNS can be set for primary and floating IPs.

Traffic distribution and safety

  • Load balancers at layer 4 or HTTP, with health checks. Targets can be servers, label selectors or IPs, including private-only servers.
  • Firewalls with stateful inbound and outbound rules, attached to servers or label selectors, at no cost.
  • Placement groups spread servers across physical hosts so one host failure does not take down the whole set.

Storage and recovery

  • Block storage volumes from 10 GB to 10 TB, which grow online.
  • Daily backups at 20% of the server price, with 7 restore points.
  • Snapshots on demand, which can seed new servers.

A typical Frankfurt stack

Here is a common layout customers build in fra1:

  1. Two app servers in a placement group, attached to a private network.
  2. A database server with a volume, on the private network only, with no public IP.
  3. A NAT gateway so the database can fetch updates.
  4. A load balancer with health checks in front of the app servers.
  5. One firewall applied by label to every server in the stack.

You can draw this in the Composer, see the monthly cost before you apply it, and let it create the resources in the right order. The optional AI assistant can draft a first version from a short description.

Billing for Frankfurt servers

Billing is the same for every resource in fra1: a prepaid balance, charged per started hour, capped at the monthly price. Traffic is not billed. There are no setup fees and no contracts.

That makes Frankfurt good for short experiments. Spin up a server, test how your app behaves for users in Europe, and delete it when you are done. You pay for the hours it ran. See hourly billing VPS for examples, and pricing for every add-on.

How to launch in Frankfurt

  1. Create an account and add credit by card or with USDT or TRX.
  2. Open your project and choose Create server. Frankfurt (fra1) is preselected.
  3. Pick a plan family and size, then an operating system or one-click app.
  4. Add an SSH key and optional cloud-init user data.
  5. Attach a firewall and, if you like, a private network.

If you prefer automation, create a wk_ API token and use the API. The create a server doc covers both paths.

Frequently asked questions

What is fra1?

fra1 is the code for our Frankfurt am Main location in the eu-central network zone. You will see it in the console and in the API when you create servers, volumes and networks.

Can I build a multi-server setup in Frankfurt?

Yes. You can connect servers with a private network, spread them across hosts with a placement group, and put a load balancer or a floating IP in front of them, all inside fra1.

How can I test the Frankfurt network before I commit?

The easiest test is to create the smallest server for an hour or two, run your own checks and delete it, since billing is hourly.

What bandwidth does a Frankfurt VPS get?

Traffic is unmetered with fair use. Ports go up to 10 Gbit/s and are shared with other customers on the same host.

Can I use the API to create servers in Frankfurt?

Yes. The REST API at https://api.wolkra.com/v1 uses project-scoped tokens and can create and manage servers and the other resources in fra1.
