Wolkra

A Vultr alternative focused on Europe

Updated

Wolkra is a Vultr alternative for workloads that serve Europe: KVM servers in Frankfurt, Germany, with unmetered traffic, prepaid hourly billing and crypto payments, starting at €3.49 per month. Vultr's strength is its global spread of locations, so the right choice depends on where your users are.

Global reach vs one central location

As of 2026-10-16, Vultr offered many locations worldwide and included a bandwidth allowance with each plan. That global footprint is genuinely useful: if your users are in Tokyo, São Paulo and Chicago, being able to put a server near each of them is hard to beat.

Wolkra takes the opposite approach. We run one location, Frankfurt, and focus on doing it well for Europe. From the centre of the continent, a single server has low latency across Europe, and your data stays in Germany.

Where your users are A good fit
Mostly Europe Wolkra in Frankfurt
Europe plus some global visitors Wolkra, with a CDN for static files
Several continents, latency-sensitive A provider with many regions, such as Vultr

Who switches their European servers

  • Teams with a European customer base who don't need other regions.
  • Traffic-heavy projects, such as media, mirrors, VPN endpoints and backup targets, where an allowance becomes a cost to manage. See unmetered bandwidth VPS.
  • Companies with EU data requirements that want one clear location. See EU VPS and GDPR.
  • Customers who pay with crypto and want a straightforward prepaid balance. See crypto VPS.

What runs on a Wolkra server

Each server is a KVM virtual machine with full root access, booting from a network volume. You can pick Ubuntu, Debian, AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux, CentOS Stream, Fedora or MikroTik CHR, or start from a one-click app like Docker, WordPress, n8n, Coolify, WireGuard, GitLab CE or OpenClaw.

Running both: a practical pattern

You don't have to pick only one provider. A common setup is:

  1. Run your European app servers and database on Wolkra in Frankfurt.
  2. Keep servers in other continents with a provider that has regions there.
  3. Connect them with a WireGuard VPN for private traffic.
  4. Use DNS-based routing or a CDN to send each visitor to the nearest site.

That way each part of your stack sits where it makes the most sense.

Questions to ask before you switch

A move is only worth it if it solves a real problem. Before you migrate, write down the answers to a few questions:

  • Where are the users of this service, by share of traffic?
  • How much data does it move in a typical month, and how much in a busy one?
  • Does any customer contract say where data must be stored?
  • Which provider-specific features does your deployment depend on?

If most users are in Europe, traffic is a noticeable cost and nothing ties you to a specific platform, a Frankfurt server is likely a good fit. If not, keep what works.

Moving European servers to Wolkra

  1. Sign up and add credit by card or crypto.
  2. Create a Frankfurt server with your current distribution.
  3. Copy your data and config, or redeploy with Docker Compose. See deploying with Docker Compose.
  4. Test, switch DNS, and remove the old server when you are sure.

Hourly billing means a parallel test run costs only the hours it takes.

Frequently asked questions

How is Wolkra different from Vultr?

As of 2026-10-16, Vultr offered many locations worldwide with a bandwidth allowance per plan. Wolkra runs in one location, Frankfurt, with unmetered traffic and fair use.

When is Vultr the better choice?

When you need servers close to users on several continents. Vultr's many locations worldwide are its clear strength, and Wolkra has only Frankfurt today.

Do you compare prices with Vultr?

No, we don't quote Vultr prices. Wolkra starts at €3.49 per month with unmetered traffic, and you can compare that with Vultr's current price list.

Can I use Wolkra and Vultr together?

Yes. Some teams run their European servers on Wolkra and keep other regions elsewhere, connecting them over the public internet with a VPN such as WireGuard.

Can I pay for Wolkra with crypto?

Yes. You can top up your balance with USDT (TRC-20) or TRX on TRON, as well as by card through Stripe.
