Your own VPN server in Germany
Updated
A VPN server in Germany on Wolkra is a small Frankfurt cloud server running WireGuard, which you control yourself, with unmetered traffic and a German exit address, from a few euros a month.
Unlike a commercial VPN service, nobody else shares the server, and you decide what is logged.
Why run your own VPN
- You hold the keys. The server and its configuration are yours. There is no VPN company in between.
- Your own exit address. Traffic leaves from your own server's address in Frankfurt instead of an address shared with thousands of strangers.
- Access to private systems. Reach servers in a private network that have no public IP at all.
- Team access without a VPN subscription per seat. Add a peer per person on one server.
The trade-off: you run it. A one-click app makes that simple, but updates and client setup are yours.
The quick way: the WireGuard app
The WireGuard app creates a server with WireGuard installed and the network settings for a VPN server in place. It is ready a few minutes after boot. You connect with SSH, create a configuration per device and import it into the WireGuard client on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS or Android.
For a full walk-through, including key generation and adding peers, see our WireGuard VPN server guide.
Which plan to choose
Standard
Shared vCPU for websites, apps, VPNs and development.
| Plan | vCPU | RAM | Disk | Traffic | Hourly | Monthly cap |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| S0 | 1 | 1 GB | 15 GB | Unmetered | €0.0056 | €3.49 |
| S1 | 1 | 2 GB | 30 GB | Unmetered | €0.0080 | €4.99 |
| S2 | 2 | 4 GB | 40 GB | Unmetered | €0.0144 | €8.99 |
| S3 | 2 | 8 GB | 50 GB | Unmetered | €0.0200 | €12.49 |
| S4 | 4 | 8 GB | 80 GB | Unmetered | €0.0288 | €17.99 |
| S5 | 4 | 16 GB | 100 GB | Unmetered | €0.0400 | €24.99 |
WireGuard needs very little CPU and memory, so the smallest Standard plan carries a personal VPN and a household of devices. Add a primary IPv4 for €0.89 a month. An IPv6 address is included. Billing is hourly from a prepaid balance and capped at the monthly price, so a VPN for one trip costs only the days you run it.
Common VPN setups
Privacy on public Wi-Fi
Route all traffic from your laptop and phone through Frankfurt when you are in hotels, cafés or airports. Your local network sees only encrypted WireGuard packets.
Admin access to private servers
Put the VPN server in the same private network as your databases and internal tools. Those servers need no public IPs. You reach them only through the tunnel, and the firewall on the VPN server allows only the WireGuard port and SSH.
Office or site-to-site link
Connect an office router, a home lab or another cloud to your Wolkra network over WireGuard, so both sides reach each other privately.
A fixed exit address for allow lists
Some services only accept connections from known addresses. Route that traffic through your VPN so it always comes from the same German address. A floating IP keeps the address when you replace the server.
Other VPN software
WireGuard is our one-click option, but any VPN that runs on Linux works on a KVM server, including OpenVPN, IPsec with strongSwan, or mesh tools that build on WireGuard. Start from a plain Linux image and install what you prefer. MikroTik CHR is also available as an image if you want a RouterOS-based VPN.
Why Wolkra for a VPN server
- Unmetered traffic. Streaming, backups and large downloads through the tunnel carry no per-GB fees. A fair-use policy applies. See unmetered bandwidth.
- Germany and the EU. The server and its logs stay in Frankfurt. See VPS Germany.
- Low latency across Europe from the centre of Europe.
- Pay your way. Card, or crypto with USDT (TRC-20) and TRX. See crypto VPS and payment methods.
- Reverse DNS for your address, set in the console. See IP addresses.
Getting good speed
The tunnel is usually limited by your own connection, not the server. If speed is low, test without the VPN first, try another network, and make sure the client uses the server's nearest address type, IPv4 or IPv6. A larger plan rarely helps WireGuard.
Use it responsibly
You are responsible for the traffic that leaves your server, including traffic from people you give access to. Running an open or public VPN for strangers usually leads to abuse reports, which we handle under our Acceptable Use Policy. Keep peers to people you know and remove keys you no longer use.
Set up your VPN
Create an account, add balance by card or crypto, and launch the WireGuard app. Your own VPN server in Germany is online in minutes.
Frequently asked questions
Is it allowed to run a VPN on a Wolkra VPS?
Yes. Running a VPN for yourself, your family or your team is fine. You are responsible for the traffic it carries under our Acceptable Use Policy.
How fast is a VPN on a small VPS?
WireGuard is light, so even the smallest plan handles typical home and mobile connections. Ports go up to 10 Gbit/s, shared, so your own line is usually the limit.
Will I get a German IP address?
Yes. The server runs in Frankfurt, so traffic through the VPN leaves from a German address.
Can I share one VPN server with my team?
Yes. Give every person their own key and configuration so you can remove one device without touching the others.
Can I pay for a VPN server with crypto?
Yes. You can top up your balance with USDT (TRC-20) or TRX on TRON, as well as by card.
