Wolkra

Linux VPS

Updated

A Wolkra Linux VPS is a KVM server in Frankfurt, Germany, with your choice of Ubuntu, Debian, AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux, CentOS Stream or Fedora, full root access and unmetered traffic. You can log in over SSH a short time after you click create.

Pick your distribution

Each distribution has its own habits and strengths. Here is a quick guide to choosing one:

Distribution Package manager A good fit when you want
Ubuntu apt The widest set of tutorials and up-to-date packages
Debian apt A calm, stable base that changes slowly
AlmaLinux dnf An RHEL-compatible system for long-lived servers
Rocky Linux dnf Another RHEL-compatible choice with a long life cycle
CentOS Stream dnf A preview of what comes next in the RHEL family
Fedora dnf The newest kernel and packages, for testing and dev boxes

Not a Linux distribution, but available on the same servers: MikroTik CHR, for people who want a virtual router with RouterOS. The operating systems page lists the images in more detail.

If you are new to servers, Ubuntu or Debian is a safe start. If your company runs RHEL-style systems elsewhere, AlmaLinux or Rocky Linux will feel familiar.

Who a Linux VPS is for

  • Sysadmins who want a clean server to configure exactly their way.
  • Web developers deploying apps with Nginx, Caddy, Node.js, Python, PHP or Go.
  • DevOps engineers building with Docker, Ansible and cloud-init.
  • Students learning the shell, permissions, systemd and networking on a real machine.
  • Self-hosters who prefer a minimal OS with only the services they chose.

Built for how Linux admins work

Access the way you like

Add SSH keys to your account and choose them when creating a server, or let us email a root password. Our SSH keys guide and connect with SSH doc cover both.

Automate the first boot

Paste cloud-init user data to install packages, create users, write config files and start services on the first boot. A short example:

#cloud-config
package_update: true
packages:
  - nginx
  - fail2ban
users:
  - name: deploy
    groups: sudo
    shell: /bin/bash
    ssh_authorized_keys:
      - ssh-ed25519 AAAA... you@laptop

Recover when things go wrong

  • Browser VNC console for when SSH is down or a firewall rule went too far.
  • Rescue mode to mount the disk and fix a broken boot or a lost password.
  • Rebuild to reinstall with the same or a different image.
  • Snapshots before risky upgrades, so you can roll back by creating a new server from the snapshot.

Grow without reinstalling

Resize to a bigger plan when you need more CPU or memory. The disk can grow with it, but it can't shrink. For data that should outlive the server, attach a block storage volume, which we can format and mount for you.

Not only a bare OS

If you don't want to start from scratch, choose a one-click app. Docker CE with Compose, WordPress, n8n, Coolify, WireGuard VPN and GitLab CE are installed on top of a Linux image and ready a few minutes after boot. You still get full root access to the system underneath.

Plans for Linux servers

All plan families run every image. Standard plans suit most Linux workloads; CPU-optimised and Memory-optimised plans help with builds and databases.

Standard

Shared vCPU for websites, apps, VPNs and development.

Every plan includes unmetered traffic, with fair use and ports up to 10 Gbit/s shared, plus an IPv6 address. A primary IPv4 is €0.89 per month. Billing is per started hour from a prepaid balance, capped at the monthly price. See pricing.

Your first hour on a new Linux server

  1. Sign up and add credit by card or crypto.
  2. Create a server in Frankfurt, pick a distribution and add your SSH key.
  3. Attach a free firewall that allows SSH and the ports your service needs.
  4. Log in, update packages and create a non-root user.
  5. Follow our guide to secure an Ubuntu server and the first steps on a new VPS.

Why run Linux in Germany

Your server sits in Frankfurt, with low latency across Europe from the centre of Europe and data stored in Germany. That suits European users and EU data rules. More on VPS Germany and the underlying KVM virtualisation.

Frequently asked questions

Which Linux distributions can I install on a Wolkra VPS?

You can choose Ubuntu, Debian, AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux, CentOS Stream or Fedora. MikroTik CHR is also available for virtual routing.

Do I get full root access?

Yes. Every server is a KVM virtual machine with full root access. You log in with your SSH key or a root password sent by email.

Can I switch to a different distribution later?

Yes. Rebuild the server with another image from the console. A rebuild replaces the disk contents, so take a snapshot first if you want to keep anything.

Is cloud-init supported?

Yes. You can paste cloud-init user data when you create a server to install packages, add users or run scripts on first boot.

What if I lock myself out over SSH?

Open the browser VNC console from the server page, or boot into rescue mode to repair the system from outside.
